Innovative Ideas Help New Rec and Park General Manager Hit the Ground Running
Six ideas submitted by park users will soon become reality at a select group of neighborhood parks in San Francisco. Thanks to the efforts of the Recreation and Park Department, Neighborhood Parks Council, and the San Francisco Parks Trust, the Running Start Fund helped jumpstart Phil Ginsburg’s new role as General Manager by soliciting simple and easily achievable ideas from park users. “It was important for all of us to get off on the right foot,” said Ginsburg. “We solicited ideas from the public because they are the ones who use our parks on a daily basis and who have a vested interest in the welfare of our parks.”
More than 50 ideas were submitted in total, representing a variety of opportunities in our parks. The six ideas below will be implemented in the near future, and will demonstrate the powerful impact that simple improvements can have on the experience of park users. The park users who submitted the winning ideas were honored at the most recent Recreation and Park Commission hearing on November 19th, 2009.
1. Improved signage around park trash cans (Lia Smith)
2. Big Belly Solar Powered Trash Can at Mission Dolores Park (Gideon Kramer)
3. New Flag at Mountain Lake Park (Kate Scanlon)
4. Simplification of class/program registration procedures (Christina Goette)
5. New doggie relief stations in parks (Laura Cavaluzzo)
6. New trash cans at Louis Sutter Playground (Carol High)
