SUMMARY: The Neighborhood Parks Council (NPC) is a coalition of over 125 community-based park groups providing stewardship of neighborhood parks in San Francisco. Formed in 1996, NPC promotes city-wide stewardship of parkland, provides a forum for sharing information and expertise between park volunteers and city agencies, arranges educational presentations and workshops, monitors conditions in neighborhood parks, conduct research to promote best practices in parkland management and recreation programming, and advocates to government officials for increased public commitment and support for the restoration and improved maintenance of our neighborhood parks, playgrounds and recreation facilities.

NPC seeks a passionate park advocate who will work on playground, athletic field and park maintenance issues. The goal of this position is to advocate for improved conditions at San Francisco’s most dilapidated parks and playgrounds, to foster community engagement around renovated athletic fields and to encourage use of ParkScan.org, our web-based parks maintenance tool. The Program Assistant, under the direction of Program Coordinators, will work with communities to implement a specific work plan that improves the conditions at failed (grade ‘D’ and ‘F’) playgrounds in San Francisco and to execute workdays at these playgrounds in conjunction with the Recreation and Parks Department (RPD).

The Program Assistant will also engage communities through workdays, special events and community meetings to increase stewardship of their neighborhood athletic fields, helping to ensure the fields are safe, properly used and enhance the common spaces of their neighborhoods. In addition, the Program Assistant will support generating interest in and use of NPC’s ParkScan.org tool to report conditions in San Francisco Parks. The ideal candidate will have some experience with outreach and public advocacy in diverse communities, be an analytical thinker and problem solver, be an excellent writer with experience in report preparation and public education materials. Experience with online technology and data analysis is essential. Strong communication, presentation, and people skills are essential. The ability to work independently and take initiative within the context of a team, while tracking progress against program goals and objectives, is essential.

DUTIES:

• Support outreach for improved park and playground maintenance in communities around the City, including presentations at neighborhood and community meetings, with a focus on areas with dilapidated play structures and low ParkScan.org usage
• Support preparation of reports for ParkScan.org and for the Playground Initiative, including Annual Reports, report cards, and assessments, and support media outreach on this information
• Implement ParkScan.org training programs among communities, RPD, and others as needed
